Peace and Conflict Resolution
Over the past 25 years, we designed unique approaches to teaching and training about peace and conflict resolution. Our flagship model for conflict analysis C.R. SIPPABIO has been the anchor of our approach as it provides a comprehensive and inter-sectional analysis of the various components of conflict and peace dynamics.
Our interactive and participatory models of teaching and training, with strong emphasis on multiculturalism, have contributed significantly to making the practical components of the courses and workshops most relevant and beneficial.
Foundation of Peace and Conflict Studies Course
The UPEACE Foundation Course provides a critical and concise introduction to the broad field of “Peace Studies” for students in ALL UPEACE programs. It initially addresses key conceptual and theoretical underpinnings of the origins and development of peace studies as an interdisciplinary area within the fields of international relations and political economy. Based on a critical analysis of policies, strategies, institutions, organizations and movements, the course then examines a range of core issues, dimensions, perspectives and paradigms for understanding the root causes of conflicts and violence and constructive strategies to address them and build peace in contemporary global, international, regional, national and local contexts.
The core concepts include militarization, disarmament and arms control; human rights violations and promotion; gender inequalities, gender-based violence and gender mainstreaming; structural violence, human security, development and globalization; environmental sustainability; corporate social responsibility; international law in conflict and peacebuilding; cultural and religious identities; media’s role in conflict and peacebuilding; strategies of nonviolence; and peace education. This Foundations course will be essential in catalyzing the awareness, understanding and motivation of UPEACE students in diverse academic programs to relate, ground and intersect their specific areas of academic and practitioner interest with core theoretical, conceptual and analytical ideas in peace studies.
Conflict Analysis & Resolution Training
This foundational workshop provides participants with the essentials of peace and conflict. The workshop is designed to resonate with various audiences including international organizations, government officials, civil society organizations and communities. The workshop develops concise understanding of the components that make up conflicts, including the dynamics influenced by conflict’s context and relationship. Participants learn specific tools for conflict analysis, and in the process examine their own tendencies and patterns of conflict behavior. This is where the workshop receives unequivocal appreciation for its transformative effect. Finally, the workshop delves into the various approaches to peaceful interventions, including cultural relevance, conflict sensitivity and ethical considerations. The workshop is notorious for its interactive, participatory and inclusive techniques and activities.
